The Muskegon Land Bank Authority was formed in 2007 to transform vacant, tax delinquent and abandoned property for the benefit of the surrounding property, to improve the community, stabilize the area, give low income families the opportunity to be home owners and return the property to the tax rolls.
"The goal is to claim at-risk homes and commercial buildings before they fall into the hands of absentee landlords. Chosen properties are rehabilitated and sold, preferably to lower-income families who have never owned a house before. Profits from home sales are then put back into the rehabilitation fund, to help save other properties."
"The land bank also claims some vacant lots, with the hope of selling them to someone who will build on them, or someone who can add them to their contiguous property. Eventually, the land bank plans to build and sell new homes on some of the vacant lots." [Muskegon Chronicle article by Steve Gunn 5/21/08]
